Because I’m a fashion assistant with ambitions of styling grandeur, I’m always on the look out for emerging fashion photographers with whom I can collaborate. After a while, a lot of books / portfolios start to look the same: amateurish, staged, and derivative. So when you do come across someone whose work makes you hover over a page for longer than 3 seconds, it’s a very good sign.
These photographs are by Selma Van Der Meijs’. What struck me as unusual about Selma’s work (in addition to the bold composition) is the lighting and the colours which result from that lighting. The contrasts and hues in the pictures really hold your interest. There is something refreshing yet traditional about her approach to fashion photography.
I discovered Selma’s work via a friend who advised me that she was coming to London to shoot a story. Selma was looking for some clothing to feature, so I lent her my graduate menswear collection for these photographs. Unfortunately, because of work commitments I couldn’t be on hand to style it. This is a bit of a shame because I think with some stylists’ tricks (a.k.a. crocodile clips and fabric tape) the garments would have looked much better and the pictures would be stunning

I recognize the shirt from the second photo!! The mister loves that one and covets it mightily. Very cool that your clothes were used in this shoot. The photos are quite cool
